  4. D)ownload -- Transfer a file from RBBS-PC to your computer.
  5. G)oodbye -- exit this system -- DISCONNET
  6. H)elp -- help with any command, section, or topic
  7. L)ist directories (categories) of files available for download
  8. N)ew files -- get list of files posted since specified date
  9. P)ersonal download -- download files addressed to you personally
  10. Q)uit -- go elsewhere - to main menu, utilities, off system
  11. S)earch -- Find files with specified text in name/description
  12. U)pload -- Transfer a file from your computer to RBBS-PC.
  13. V)iew compressed file -- look to see what is in a compressed file
  14. X)pert -- expert mode on/off

  16. ================== File Subsystem Extra HELP ==================

  18. The file subsystem permits you to move files between your system and this
  19. RBBS-PC.  Downloading refers to moving files from RBBS-PC to your computer,
  20. and uploading is moving files from your computer to RBBS-PC.
  21.  
  22. The transfer of data is usually done using an error-correcting protocol
  23. such as Xmodem, which ensures correct transfer even if noisy phone lines
  24. interfere with the flow of data.
  25.  
  26. NOTE:  If you called RBBS-PC with 7-bit word length, RBBS-PC will make you
  27. switch to 8-bit for error-correcting protocol transfers.  You may find your
  28. session garbled after such a switch.  To avoid this, call with 8-bit words
  29. (see your communications package documentation for details).

  31. To list the files that are available on for downloading to your system, use
  32. the L)ist command on the Files Menu.  The file names will be listed along
  33. with a short description of each file.
  34.  
  35. To transfer a file from RBBS-PC to your computer, use the D)ownload
  36. command.  Ask for HELP with "D" for more information.
  37.  
  38. RBBS-PC will remember your preferred transfer protocol, which can be set
  39. using UTIL command "F".  If you have selected a protocol, RBBS-PC will use
  40. it every time you transfer.  To override the default for a single transfer,
  41. add the PROTOCOL letter to your download command.  E.g.  to download
  42. RBBS-PC.ZIP using Xmodem, use the command:

  44.   D RBBS-PC.ZIP X
  45.  
  46. If you want to be asked for a protocol before EACH download, use UTIL
  47. command "F" and select protocol NONE.
  48.  
  49. ASCII DATA CAPTURE
  50.  
  51. The transfer of files in ASCII mode can be done if your system is capable
  52. of data capture.  Only TEXT files can be downloaded using ASCII mode.  To
  53. download a file using the ASCII method, follow the sequence of steps listed
  54. below.
  55.  
  56. 1.  Select the text file for download and use ASCII protocol.  E.g.
  57.     D RBBSHELP.TXT A
  58.  
  59. 2.  When RBBS-PC tells you to open your capture file and enter a carriage
  60.     return to start the download, you should do so.  (See your
  61.     communications package documentation for information on CAPTURE text).
  62.     After setting up to receive the file on your communications package,
  63.     you have to send RBBS-PC one carriage return so that it knows you are
  64.     ready to start.

  66. 6.  The file will be sent a line at a time until the entire file is sent.
  67.     You will see the lines of ASCII code (readable text and numbers) on
  68.     your screen as they flow to your system.  If you wish to suspend the
  69.     transmission temporarily, your system should send RBBS-PC a Ctrl-S
  70.     (XOFF).  A Ctrl-Q (XON) will restart the temporarily halted transfer.
  71.     A Ctrl-X (ASCII CAN) can be sent anytime to abort the transmission of
  72.     the data; because of the output buffering performed automatically by
  73.     RBBS-PC, there may be up to 120 characters transmitted before the
  74.     output stops.

  76. 7.  When the file transfer is finished, RBBS-PC will send you an End Of
  77.     File Marker (Ctrl-Z) followed by 5 bells.  You should close your
  78.     capture file as soon as you hear the bells or you will get garbage at
  79.     the bottom of the file.  If you go away for a cup of coffee and end up
  80.     getting the 'end of file' sign attached to the bottom of the capture
  81.     file, you can delete it from the file later using a text editor.

  83. 8.  After the file transfer is complete you will be returned to the File
  84.     Menu.  You should check the capture file at this point to be sure you
  85.     received it properly.  If you do this while still online, remember that
  86.     RBBS-PC will hang up if your session is inactive for too long.

  88. FILE UPLOADING
  89.  
  90. File uploading to RBBS-PC is very similar to downloading.  After you have
  91. downloaded a few files, you might want to send one of your favorite
  92. programs or files just to test your ability to upload.
  93.  
  94. Before sending a file to RBBS-PC, be sure there is enough disk space on
  95. RBBS-PC to accept the file.  When you ask for U)pload at the File menu, the
  96. system will tell you how much disk space is free on the upload drive.  If
  97. this system runs out of disk space during an upload function, it will
  98. cancel the upload.

  100. UPLOAD GROUND RULES
  101.  
  102. You are encouraged to donate programs to the library on this system.  Any
  103. type of program or document is welcome, however, a few ground rules are in
  104. order.  The files donated must contain only information that is in the
  105. public domain, or can be freely distributed.  No private or commercial
  106. information should be placed on this system.  The SYSOP is not responsible
  107. for any of the data that is shared on this system.
